Human beings are emotional creatures and the biggest challenge they face most of the time is controlling their emotion at the time of decision making. It is called an ability, attribute, talent, skill, competency or trait (call it what you prefer) to keep all those emotions within and not letting them affect your important decision making.
If a person is skilled in it, he or she can effectively keep their emotion inside and do not let them come during the time of crucial decision. Employees who have good emotional control are the one who are aware of their emotions. They know it well what sets them off. They possess the ability to compartmentalize them which allows these individuals to make decision based on the figure presented in front of them and not entirely by the excitement. The kind of personalities is very good in managing their stress, fears, excitement or the prejudice.
Emotions only make the stressful situations worse. Those people who fail to demonstrate such skills are short of control. Their feeling come out even before their words. Just think about the people who get red in face and you can easily see anger of fear on their face. Such personalities are not preferred in management as it is believed that in their decisions a driving force of emotion can easily be seen.
Adoptable behavior for emotion management –
• Keeping body language positive when facing negative encounters
• Making this statement ‘We agree to disagree without rancor’.
• At the stressful argument taking a deep breath or counting to ten
• Using ‘I statements’ such as I think I need to gain more perspective regarding this issue
• Telling one of your colleagues you need 24 hours to think about the situation or issue before responding
• Walking away silently from a heated discussion or emotionally violate situation
Controlling your emotion does not mean you have to become a robot. No one wants a workforce which behaves like a robot or where emotions are non-existent. Balance must be maintained. How well it is maintained speaks to this important talent intelligence of emotional control.
